Alan C. Middleton PhD

Independent author, teacher, speaker, and a consultant .


His 25-year practitioner career includes marketing roles with the Universal Oil Products Company (UOP Inc.) in Chicago, USA, Esso Petroleum in Oslo, Norway, his own business in Toronto (AMCA Marketing) and a career in advertising with the J. Walter Thompson (JWT) advertising agency in the UK, Canada and Japan concluding as President/CEO of JWT Japan and Executive Vice President and a Board Director of the worldwide company.


His 28-year academic career includes teaching at the Rutgers Graduate School of Business in the US, leading business schools in Argentina, China, India, Russia and Thailand, and from 1998 - 2020 the marketing faculty at the Schulich School of Business, York University where he ended as Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Marketing. From 2001-2020 he was Executive Director of the Schulich Executive Education Centre (SEEC) which ran non-degree programs for over 10,000 executives and managers a year domestically and internationally. The group was continuously ranked in the top 45 executive and management training organizations in the world.


Alan authored “Mentorship Matters – Now More than Ever” in 2021, “Marketing Matters for Small & Medium Enterprise (SMEs)”in 2022, “Reputation Matters – Why Branding & PR is Not Enough” in 2023 for AMA Toronto, available on Amazon.ca. He had previously co-authored the books “Advertising Works II”, and “Ikonica – A Fieldguide to Canada’s Brandscape” and has numerous papers and book chapters published.


Alan teaches branding, strategy, marketing and mentorship for organizations like AMA- Toronto, Seneca College, York Entrepreneurship Development Institute (YEDI) and others He has served on Not-For-Profit Boards like CanadaHelps.org. the ROM, ABC Life Literacy and still sits on its Communications Committee. He is on the Advisory Board of Balmoral Multicultural. He is an Associate Professor at HEC University of Montreal, is on AMA-Toronto Advisory Board and is a long-time mentor in its Mentor Exchange program; a member of Leger’s Academic Advisory Committee and in early 2021 contributed to the Royal Society of Canada Working Group Report on Vaccine Acceptance.


He is a member of the consulting group Sage Management Advice that has done work for organizations like Pet Value and Save the Children Canada.


He is an inductee of the Canadian Marketing Hall of Legends, a holder of the ACA Gold Medal for contribution to the marketing industry, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for service to the literacy movement, the International Association of Business Communicators Toronto Communicator of the Year award, and the AMA- Toronto Luminary Award.
