Updated: Aug 12

On Saturday, August 9th, 2025, the Welland International Flatwater Centre came alive with the thunder of drums, the splash of paddles, and the cheers of spectators. Among the standout moments of the 3rd Annual Hope Floats Dragon Boat Festival was the inspiring performance of the NorthStar Dragon Boat Team, who proudly brought home the gold medal in the Special Needs Division.

This festival, hosted by Alkame Dragon Boat Services and benefiting the South Niagara Canoe Club and Hope Floats BCS, is more than just a race—it’s a celebration of strength, teamwork, and community spirit. Teams from across the region gathered to compete in premier North American dragon boat racing, with the Hope Floats Challenge at its heart.

For NorthStar, this victory represents more than athletic achievement. It’s a testament to the power of inclusion, the courage to push beyond limits, and the unshakable belief that everyone has the ability to shine when given the opportunity. The team, made up of children with special needs, demonstrated extraordinary determination and teamwork from start to finish.

The Special Needs Division showcased the very best of what dragon boating can offer—bringing together people of all abilities to share in the thrill of competition. The NorthStar crew’s synchronized paddling, unwavering focus, and sheer willpower carried them across the finish line first, earning loud cheers from the crowd and admiration from fellow competitors.

NorthStar extends heartfelt thanks to the event organizers, volunteers, fellow teams, and supporters who made this unforgettable day possible. And while the gold medal will be treasured, the memories of shared laughter, team spirit, and the feeling of being part of something bigger than themselves will shine even brighter.

Congratulations to the NorthStar Dragon Boat Team—you’ve truly proven that hope floats, and dreams soar!
